Culture Countered
The First Annual Washington DC Counter Culture Festival (hosted by us DC Conspiracy types) has came and went and we claim success. It was just a good time, everyone had fun – it was a great environment to sell some stuff, promote your wares, bounce ideas around with other creative people, eat a burger and drink many a beer (I had five pitchers, myself).
I personally got to seem some great cartoons, clothes and trinkets and Robin made her rounds and handed off a Christmas list to me of the stuff she wants. The Washington Psychotronic Film Society showed some great little short films, “Robot Bastard” being my personal favorite of the bunch. A decent amount of people stuck around for the movies, using the two hour block to eat some Philly Steaks and drink, well, more beer.
After the film screening it was time for the live music and all three bands rocked hard. Supercade got it started with a good amount of energy and amazing vocals, Devon’s voice was a surprisingly powerful and filled the joint nicely. Mostly Monkee was a great little rock-a-billy/reggae band that had many a heads bobbing and feet tapping. Then came the high energy Death by Sexy, the two-man band reminiscent of The Misfits who came complete with their own smoke machine, disco lights and feather boas.
Everyone I talk to said they had a good time – hopefully we’ll build on this for next year. Dremo’s might not be around, unfortunately, but wherever we end up we’ll be sure to keep the show free for creators and attendees. Below are some pictures. Unfortunately my camera died pretty early on so if anyone out there has pictures, please send them along.

it was definitely a solid show, in my opinion. in fact, a number of folks told me they were surprised by the number and variety of vendors and by the number of folks who did come through (given that the floor was open for three hours late afternoon on a saturday in a dimly-lit cavernous bar!) i had a blast. kudos to jason and evan for planning, pimping and pumping and to everyone else who spread the word!
